Many stogie aficionados appreciate a quality drink with their smoke. A favorite whiskey, an aged scotch, or even a cup of coffee – these are the compliments to the smoke, a personal heaven. Whether the combo is waking you up or winding you down, they’re often the quiet respite for your day.

Cigar Box Reserve

We came across a wine label called Cigar Box Reserve , and we’re pretty excited about it. The grape is Malbec. “Argentina” Malbec grapes are known to have originated in France, but the grape has made its way to Argentina. Thus, Cigar Box Reserve is a South American label. The Malbec grapes grown in Argentina are bit different from their French cousins; often the grapes grow smaller and closer together, and the hallmark characteristics are its deep color, fruity notes, and velvet texture. We figure that if we’re drinking any kind of wine with our cigar, we’re better off pairing our complex flavored Cubans or sweet tasting Honduran tobaccos with a wine grown from the grapes of the same land. More or less, anyways.

The  Cigar Box Reserve is said to be medium-bodied and savory. The wine reviews detected cinnamon, currants, and plums – but make no mistake about it, this is not a heavy dessert wine. Cigar Box Reserve is best paired with something that it can stand up against – a grilled beef, or a nice Cuban smoke.

Now, we’re not pretending to be wine aficionados on this blog, thank you very much we’ll save that for someone else. We’re just expanding on what we already know to be true about pairing a quality cigar with something just as interesting to drink – wine, with all of its complex flavors and notes is just that.
