Yankees Win. . . A-Rod Celebrates with a Cigar
Many of us breathlessly watched the World Series Wednesday night, until the outcome was final: Phillies 3, Yankees 7. If you’re a fan of the New York Yankees, you may have cheered the win with a celebratory cigar. (Phillies fans, on the other hand, may also have drowned their sorrows over a good smoke.) That’s what Alex Rodriguez did.
“His cartoonish feats of the postseason complete, Alex Rodriguez sat on a counter in the bowels of the new Yankee Stadium, a cigar in his hand. . .“ reported the MLB.com. Later, with the “cigar still smoking, Rodriguez beamed when he discussed how difficult it really is to win a World Series title. And he knows best. Rodriguez did it, after so many years of waiting, after so many years of uncertainty, finally achieving a feat that many players never do.”
A-Rod, who was born in New York and raised in the Dominican Republic and Miami, appears to be a long-time cigar enthusiast. A December 2004 “Cigar All-Stars” article from Cigar Aficionado profiled those well-known athletes and coaches who have an affinity for cigars.
“According to his agent, Scott Boras, Alex Rodriguez enjoys a cigar now and again. How couldn’t you when you’re baseball’s $252 million man, with powers at the plate and with the leather making you one of baseball’s best all-around players?”
And in a prophetic bit of writing, the article ends with: “Today, A-Rod is looking at a bright future with the New York Yankees and chances are it’s one that will bring him one or two celebratory cigars.”
