The “When will the Cuban embargo end?” discussion won‘t end—and for good reason. Meanwhile, a chorus of congresspeople at least want to move to the next step, that being a removal on the travel ban.

Congressman Jeff Flake of Arizona’s Sixth District (R) recently called for the travel ban to be lifted. It’s a call to action that Flake, who’s also a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has made before.

“I was elected to be a Member of Congress, not a travel agent,” Flake has said. “Americans should be able to travel wherever they want. They don’t need our advice and shouldn’t have to seek our permission.”

The best way to encourage Cuba to adopt a more democratic approach to government is to ease up on U.S.-mandated trade and travel restrictions, Flake believes. Flake and Congressman Bill Delahunt of Massachusetts‘s 10th District (D) have teamed up to try to pass the Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act (H.R. 874), which according to Flakes’s website, has 178 co-sponsors.
